I woke up this morning to the realization that what happened last night was most definitely NOT a nightmare.
One of my external hard drives is dead. Toast. Turns on but makes the click of death and neither my desktop computer OR laptop will recognize it connected to any USB port.
And oh yeah, it's the hard drive that has the backups of ALL my photos from the past year and a half. Countless show photos, my Alaska photos, everything except the last two weeks' worth.
Some of the older ones are backed up elsewhere, but FUCK. Guess I'm gonna have to pay for data recovery. Like I have that kind of money. Or any money at all, really.
And oh yeah, now I need a new hard drive. Or something. I'm thinking of investing in one of these NAS thingies. Anyone have any experience with things of this sort (British Joe, I'm looking at you)? I need like double or triple backup at this point. I'm in full-on freak-out mode. And yeah, it's not like I have another $500 anywhere either, but at this point, I should probably just accept that I'm not going to get out of grad school without being in some sort of debt. Sigh.
The only thing keeping me going right now is the thought of Radiohead tonight. I just gotta get through this day somehow...

Use Amazon's S3 service with JungleDisk:

100% safe, encrypted and available anywhere.
Amazon's S3 is good and not too expensive.
ReplyDeleteAnother option is Carbonite:

as is Mozy:

Amazing SF Pitchfork photos, by the way.

Drobo might be a good solution for redundant local backup: http://www.drobo.com/
ReplyDeleteI would definitely also get some offsite backup working though, as suggested above.
Hope you have luck with the data recovery. Make sure you unplug the dead drive. If the disk itself has failed (which sounds likely) you don't want it spinning at all.
