Keeping with the Christmas theme, I suppose. After a delicious dinner at South Beach (where I consumed 2 fried shrimp tacos AND a lobster taco, much to P's amazement), we wandered up a few blocks with my tripod in order to snap this photo.

On the way back to the car, we were discussing how neither of us really likes Ocean Beach that much. Regardless, I said that I was glad it existed in this town. It's this weird little niche area that has a particular vibe to it, and while it's not really my vibe at all, I'm glad that it's there.

Also - I live maybe 15 minutes away from the ocean, but tonight was the first time I've smelled it in a long time. I should probably try and do that more often.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

Complete inability to accurately estimate the volume of a turkey

Angela was worried that her 12-pound turkey might not fit into this bag. And she made me promise to caption this photo "Inability to accurately estimate ANYTHING." Because I'm pretty sure AT LEAST 8 12-pound turkeys could fit into that bag. It even has handles!

I have so many things to be thankful for, and I try to remember them everyday, not just this one. Great family, absolutely amazing friends, science that seems to have taken a turn for the better. And as much as I bitch about the non-weather, I live in a town that's pretty excellent, and only 15 minutes away from the Pacific Ocean. It's hard to beat that.

Also, is it weird to say that I'm thankful for the internet? Technology in general? Without the former, some very important friendships never would have even gotten off the ground. And I like the ability to easily communicate with someone who lives 2500 miles away, or even further. Without the latter, well, let's just say I would never be able to afford all the film I would need to take all these crazy photos. So hooray for technology.

Now let's just get that whole teleportation thing off the ground, mkay?

Sunday night I went to check out O'Death at the Casbah. I took some photos, but they all turned out like shit because the lights were extremely low and, to be honest, I wasn't feeling motivated enough to break out the flash.

I felt all sorts of discombobulated that night. This disco ball was hanging over the middle of the dance floor, which was confusing to both me and Rosey ("That's not usually there, right?" said the girl who spends more time at the Casbah than anyone else I know).

The second band started off with a weird funky song that sounded straight out of a blaxploitation film. And then switched to country. WEIRD. And then there were their friends, or fans, or...something. Can I just note that you might want to avoid that first booth in the back bar for a little while? And also the spot right in front of the merch booth? And also the dance floor? And everywhere?

Despite being sober and wanting to kill people because of it, when O'Death started playing, all that sort of melted away. They sounded really great, which was why it was such a shame when matters of...ummm...hygiene (and shirtlessness) made it necessary to retreat to the smoking patio to watch the rest of the show. Which was alright with me, as Rosey was stuck at the merch table and seemed to enjoy the company.

But still - weird fucking night. Just...weird.

100 words for snow

I've recently realized that my entire time in San Diego, I've never once heard a person refer to rain as anything other than "rain."

It doesn't drizzle. It doesn't spit. It doesn't mist.

And it certainly doesn't pour.

There's no steady rain, no showers, no squalls.

It just...rains. Except when it doesn't. Which is most of the time.

I used all three of my macro filters (+1, +2, and +4) on the 50mm f1.8 lens for this shot. I also blasted the leaf from behind with flash - a trick that a guide on a photo safari on our Alaska trip told me about, but that I just now managed to try out. Definitely like the results...

Damn good book. I'm surprised it took me this long to get around to it, since I really enjoyed the movie.

Had an interesting discussion with Kelly about the characters afterward. About how I enjoyed the book more than the movie, because it let you get a lot more into the mind of Anton Chigurh, and how you end up seeing him as a completely rational human being. Everything he does makes sense and is totally predictable, once you understand his set of principles. Interesting, since he's an absolutely terrifying person. Everyone else in the novel suffers from the flaw of loving something - a person, money, reputation - which causes them to act irrationally and eventually leads them to their downfall. But not Chigurh, and that's why he lives in the end.

This book made me realize how much I miss reading. And how much I miss talking about books. It's something I've neglected entirely too much this year.

Show Photos: FM94.9 6th Anniversary Bash, 11/08/2008

Photos: TV on the Radio, Delta Spirit, Dirtbombs @ 4th and B

I wasn't feeling so great this day. I was worried that I was getting sick, and with a Vegas trip coming up in a week, I decided to take a Nyquil-induced nap in the afternoon.

The next thing I know, I got a Twitter-text from Rosey saying that she was headed to the 4th and B and hoped she wasn't going to miss the FM94.9 band, who were on first. She didn't, but I did.

I managed to make it down there and pick up my photo pass just as the Dirtbombs were starting up. I sweet-talked a bouncer into letting me skip the line so I could get inside in time to get photos during their first 3 songs. I hate doing stuff like that, but when duty calls...

The venue was packed (it was a sold-out show) and the crowd seemed to really dig the Dirtbombs - especially when one of the drummers went offstage and into the crowd with a bass drum.

Dirtbombs @ 4th and B, 11/08/2008

Delta Spirit played second to an incredibly receptive crowd - as they usually do when they play their hometown. It's nice to see the boys making a name for themselves elsewheres, too.

Their first three songs rocked, but there was nowhere in the world I wanted to be more that night than at home in bed. So as much as I hated doing it, after I got my photo's worth, I headed that way without listening to the rest of their set. I'm sure I'll regret that at some point, but that night, I was pretty happy with my decision.

A couple weeks ago, I made Katie traipse around Balboa Park with me for a portrait session.

It was kind of a weird day. I had already taken a bunch of photos of Daye's football team, then I had this portrait shoot, then I was heading down to the Casbah to see the Heavy and Kenan Bell.

I think the only thing I did between all those shoots was upload photos and nap.

Contest - Win a signed copy of The Black Keys' "Attack and Release"

If you haven't heard, The Black Keys released a live DVD yesterday. It was recorded at the Crystal Ballroom (as the name of the DVD implies) in Portland, Oregon, on April 4th, 2008.

If you haven't seen The Black Keys live yet, you're missing out. They blew me away a few years ago at the House of Blues (sadly, I have no photos from that show), and I was super bummed to have missed them at Outside Lands this year (thanks to Beck and some awful stage layouts). It's just a completely raw, gritty performance, and if you don't believe me, well, watch/listen to this:

Video: The Black Keys - I Got Mine (live)
MP3: The Black Keys - I Got Mine (live)

Trailer: The Black Keys - Live at the Crystal Ballroom

Or just buy the whole thing here, for only $9!

This DVD contains live versions of many of their songs off their latest Danger Mouse-produced album, Attack and Release. So, to celebrate, I'm giving away an autographed copy of Attack and Release.

If you want to be entered into the contest, shoot me an email at natkardos AT gmail DAWT com, with "Black Keys" as the subject, and include your full name and address. The contest will be open to all U.S. residents, and will close at 11:59PM this Sunday, the 23rd. So get those emails in!

Show Review: Frightened Rabbit, Spinto Band, Dynamite Walls @ U-31, 11/05/2008

Photos: Frightened Rabbit, Spinto Band, Dynamite Walls @ U-31

Can we talk about how hard it is to take photos of a band when all you want to do is listen to them with your eyes closed?

Can we talk about how I've seen this band 3 times within the last year and how they never fail to amaze me?

Can we talk about how I always walk away feeling completely emotionally drained, but completely happy? Like I just laid it all out on the line with someone I really cared about, and they unexpectedly told me that they feel the exact same way?

Can we talk about Frightened Rabbit?

This is a band that I can truly pull my indie rock cred card out on. I saw them for the first time, playing in between Swim Party and Quasi at the Casbah just about a year ago. I had no idea who they were. No one on this side of the Atlantic did. Not even Pitchfork.

But I was blown away. So was P. The thing about P is, he's notorious for hating to spend money. But immediately after their set that night, he made a beeline for the merch booth and bought their album. Not the much-lauded Midnight Organ Fight, mind you, but Sing the Greys. Their first album, which now mostly falls to the wayside. Tragically.

So that was experience number one. Number two came in June, three nights before I left for Alaska via Seattle. For a variety of reasons, I was angsty enough that I listened to Midnight Organ Fight almost exclusively while I was rambling along in the northernmost state of the union.

And that brings us to experience number three. U-31. Not my favorite bar, if mostly because of the crowd. I don't like feeling out of place, judged even, when wearing a Casbah hoodie and a Hold Steady t-shirt. And by the way, can someone let everyone else know that the 80's ended almost 20 years ago?

Anyway. My emotional status is even more angsty, if that's possible. I've been working myself to the bone the last few weeks, trying to gather enough momentum to make it through to the end of grad school. Catharsis has come in the form of music, but not much of it live these days. I think maybe I was saving up all that energy for this show.

And what a show. Dynamite Walls opened to a receptive crowd, and even debuted some new material.

Dynamite Walls @ U-31, 11/05/2008

The Spinto Band was ridiculously energetic, which seemed a recipe for disaster with six nerdy guys on stage. But they somehow managed to avoid collisions, and by the end of their set I was about ready to take any of them home with me.

Spinto Band @ U-31, 11/05/2008

Spinto Band @ U-31, 11/05/2008

And then the headliner (that I don't think was actually SUPPOSED to be the headliner on this tour). Frightened Rabbit. Despite early sound issues, they powered through and delivered a completely eviscerating set.

Frightened Rabbit @ U-31, 11/05/2008

I don't know how they perform with such energy and emotion night after night on tour. Maybe this is why they play somewhat short sets. Scott pours absolutely everything into singing his brutally honest lyrics, and I can't see how anyone could not sing along.

Frightened Rabbit @ U-31, 11/05/2008

I was belting out every word I knew, pouring my own soul into each chorus, feeling as if at least by sharing in the emotion, I could take some of the pain away.

Frightened Rabbit @ U-31, 11/05/2008

Also, the drinks helped. As they are wont to do.

At the end of their set, I was completely drained. Emotionally exhausted. Feeling the way you feel after a relationship in a long downward spiral finally dissolves. Shattered, but relieved.

Frightened Rabbit @ U-31, 11/05/2008

This is what great music does to you. It tears out your soul, rips it into shreds, and makes you grateful about it. Because you can always start anew. Sometimes you just need a little help getting rid of the old.
