It made me sad to send back the rental Canon 18-55mm f1.8 IS lens that I had for Coachella. But sadly, I do not have $1000 to purchase one of my own.
It would have been nice to have a little more reach on the lens for the main stage. For Outside Lands, I'm thinking of renting the Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS "L" lens, and then bringing along my 20mm and 50mm prime lenses for any smaller stages. We'll see how I feel in August.

My show set up is almost identical to what you were mentioning but with the Nikon versions: 80-200 f/2.8, 20mm f/2.8, 50mm f/1.4. It works pretty well.
ReplyDeleteAll those low f stops really make things big and heavy though. Great for indoor lighting but you probably don't need that in Golden Gate Park.
Though, I suppose there will be nighttime sets. I wonder what their lighting will be like.
The nice thing about the 80-200 is that you can stand back from the stage and still get pretty close up shots. I hate having to push up to the front and I'm not always convinced that up-the-nose shots of performers are from the best perspective.
I like the low f-stops for reasons other than necessity. On big stages like that, with lots of equipment around, I like to stay under f3.5 so all the background stuff is blurry and less distracting. I only switch to smaller apertures if I'm trying to get multiple performers in a shot.
